Perfectly, imperfect!

Dear Proteas:

I have been thinking lately about how perfect I want my self-care routine to be. The truth is that it is not. Some weeks, I am more consistent than others. Below, I have included some examples of my perfectly imperfect self-care routines.

Exercise: I often run almost 6 miles three to four times a week. I realized that there are some days when my body needs a rest, so I have decided to walk instead. I recognize that it is good to push through, but it is equally important to listen to your body if you have strained muscles or have not rested well to prevent further injuries.

Foods: There are days when I crave certain foods, and I eat them (in moderation). During the few days each month when I eat a little more than usual, I am kind to myself. I no longer feel guilty about eating foods I should avoid. Do not get me wrong, I take precautions. For example, I am lactose intolerant, and if I want to eat ice cream, I do, but I take lactase tablets to prevent the side effects of being intolerant. The important thing is to eat well most of the time and to reduce the amount of foods you consume that negatively impact your digestive system.

Finance: There are things that I need to buy, but I must do this in moderation. I enjoy purchasing clothing, including workout gear, but it can all be pricey. As much as dressing nicely feels good, being financially responsible while dressing well feels much better. I recognize that dressing well can boost one's confidence as it promotes self-development and style. I achieve this when I am comfortable in the clothing I wear for sleep, workouts, and work. But I must practice self-control when it comes to spending (it is about balance).

My point is, there will be good days and bad days, but do not let the bad days win. The other thought is that there will be things you love, but you can only have them occasionally; when you do, enjoy them, but set limits by avoiding splurging.
